It’s often caused by a stroke in the brain stem — the base of Wallenberg syndrome, also known as “lateral medullary syndrome” or “posterior inferior cerebellar artery (PICA) syndrome”, is the most prevalent posterior ischemic stroke syndrome. Named after Adolf Wallenberg in 1895, this neurological condition is characterized by lateral medullary infarction resulting from an occlusion of the posterior inferior cerebellar artery (PICA) or the vertebral artery . The lateral medullary syndrome, also known as Wallenberg's syndrome, is the prototype lesion involving the nuclei of cranial nerves IX and X. The syndrome results from infarction of the medulla by vertebral artery thrombosis or dissection that may also produce occlusion of the opening to the posterior inferior cerebellar artery. 33 Wallenberg’s syndrome is a neurological condition caused by a stroke in the vertebral or posterior inferior cerebellar artery of the brain stem.
